Expectations

How do tattoos work? How do I book an appointment? What happens at the appointment?

From start to finish, there is a lot that happens, so here is a quick run down of what goes on!

How Tattoos Work

Tattoos work by injecting ink into the dermis, just below the surface layer of the skin. While the tattoo is healing, your skin cells “eat” the ink which dyes them. When those skin cells die, new cells consume them, and dye them as well. The more your skin needs to replace itself, the faster your tattoo will fade. This is also why exposure to sunlight can fade your tattoo over time!

Sunscreen and reducing sun exposure are great ways to keep your tattoos vibrant and slow their fading.

Booking an Appointment

Every tattoo shop has its own process, policies, and procedures! Make sure to check out the website of the shop you’re interested in or get in touch to ask them how things work. Here we’ll go over how things work here at Mystic Moon Tattoos!

At our shop, we start by having clients fill out a detailed form to gather all the info we need for your design. This takes the place of a formal consultation, however we’re always here to discuss the design and answer any questions you have. We also send out the design for review before your appointment, so there is always time for any revisions you may need! After your form is in, we will find an appointment slot for you, and then secure it with your non-refundable deposit. The deposit is not extra money, 100% of it will go towards the final price of your tattoo.

Once you’re booked in, it’s a good time to review your shop’s policies so you’re fully prepared for your appointment. Here at Mystic Moon Tattoos, we kindly ask each client to keep the following in mind:

  • We are mask mandatory, and unable to provide a mask. Don’t forget to bring your own mask.

  • Moisturize frequently for the week prior to your appointment.

  • Do not drink alcohol 14 hours before your appointment and no heavy drinking the day before.

  • Exfoliate skin the night before your appointment.

  • Get a good night’s rest before your appointment.

  • Eat a minimum of 3 hours before your tattoo. Come hydrated and well-fed.

  • Arrive 15 minutes early to fill out our consent form.

You can review our full policies here.

What to Expect for your Appointment

The day of your appointment has come! After arriving 15 minutes early, we’ll have you fill out a consent form, and then it’s time to get started! We’ll go over size and placement with you, and then proceed with the stencil. Your artist will confirm that you’re 100% happy with the design before we move forward. Remember, this is the best time to be picky, since the permanent part hasn’t started yet!

After you’re stencilled and have confirmed you’re happy with the design, placement, and size, we can start the tattoo! We’ll open fresh needles, pour the ink in front of you, and make sure everything is ready to go. Everything we use is single use per client, and is properly disposed of afterwards.
